José de San Martín was an Argentine general and the prime leader of the southern part of South America’s successful struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire. His father, Juan Jose de San Martín y Gómez, was an unsuccessful Spanish soldier, from Cervatos de la Cueza, Palencia. His mother, Gregoria Matorras del Ser, was also Spanish, from Paredes de Nava, Palencia. He was married to María de los Remedios de Escalada y La Quintana.
José’s paternal grandparents were Andrés de San Martín de la Riguera (the son of Lorenzo de San Martín de Castro Diez and María de la Riguera) and Isidora Gómez. Lorenzo was the son of Hernando de San Martín and María Castro Diez.
José’s maternal grandparents were Domingo Matorras y González (the son of Juan Matorras and Catalina González) and María del Ser y Antón (the daughter of Blas del Ser and Gregoria Antón).
