Julie Payette is a Canadian businesswoman, former astronaut, and engineer. She has served as the 29th Governor General of Canada, since October 2, 2017.

Governor-General Payette’s father, André Payette, is an engineer. Governor-General Payette’s mother, Jacqueline (Carey), worked as a theatre accountant.

Governor-General Payette was married to retired Royal Canadian Air Force pilot William Flynn, until their divorce, with whom she has a son. She was previously married to engineering professor François Brissette, until their divorce.

A few of Governor-General Payette’s distant ancestors were First Nations, specifically Algonquin and Kaskaskia.

Governor-General Payette’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her ninth great-grandfather, Pierre Payet (c. 1610, Libourne, Gironde, France – November 2, 1694, Montreal, Quebec).

Governor-General Payette’s paternal grandfather was Roland Payet (later Payette, the son of Benoni Payet, later Payette, and of Élisabeth Marin). Benoni was the son of François Payet (later Payette) and Tharsille Payet dit St-Amour. Élisabeth was the daughter of Louis Forêt dit Marin and Sophornie Quévillon.

Governor-General Payette’s paternal grandmother was Jeanne Huberdeau (the daughter of Louis Huberdeau and Alice Martin). Louis was the son of Louis Huberdeau and Rose de Lima Brossard. Alice was the daughter of Alfred Martin and Malvina Ste-Marie.

Governor-General Payette’s maternal grandfather was Noël Carey (the son of Adélard Carey and Blanche Asselin). Adélard was the son of Paul Carré and Adelina Goulet. Blanche was the daughter of Joseph Asselin and Louise Robitaille.

Governor-General Payette’s maternal grandmother was Cécile Marcotte (the daughter of Alphonse Marcotte and Ardelise Trépanier). Alphonse was the son of Octave Marcotte and Rosianne Marion. Ardelise was the daughter of Joseph Trépanier and Sophronie Desautels.

Governor-General Payette’s matrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her eleventh great-grandmother, Catherine Dorbelle (c. 1611, Amiens, Somme, France – December 1, 1708, Angers, Anjou, France).

Governor-General Payette is a direct descendant of Zacharie Cloutier (c. 1590-1677), a prominent early Quebec settler.
